Netflix’s IC 814 Drama Sparks Major Debate: What Happened in the Government’s High-Stakes Meeting?

A significant meeting recently took place between senior officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Netflix's Head of Content, Monica Shergill. The discussions, held at the Secretary's office in Shastri Bhavan, aimed to address the controversies surrounding the streaming platform's portrayal of sensitive content.

The meeting saw the participation of Monica Shergill, Netflix's Head of Content, along with two senior officials from the Ministry, and Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Over the course of an hour, the primary focus was the content depicted in Netflix's IC 814 web series. Sources indicate that Netflix has pledged to take Indian public sentiment into account when uploading future content.

The IC 814 web series, which dramatizes the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 by the Pakistani terrorist group Harakat-ul-Mujahideen, has sparked considerable controversy. The series is criticised for referring to two hijackers by Hindu code names, namely Bhola and Shankar, rather than explicitly identifying all five hijackers as Muslim terrorists. Critics argue that this portrayal misrepresents the facts and has incited a significant backlash on social media, with calls for a ban on the series.

The controversy centres around the series' use of pseudonyms for the hijackers. Names such as Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola, and Shankar were assigned to the hijackers, but the use of Hindu names for two of them has been particularly contentious. Critics have accused director Anubhav Sinha of failing to accurately represent the hijackers' identities, suggesting that the show should have clearly identified them as Muslim extremists.
