To honour the Indian revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev who were hanged by the British Government in 1931, March 23 is celebrated as Shaheed Diwas. In 1928, the trio was convicted guilty of killing deputy police superintendent JP Saunders in retaliation for Lala Lajpat Rai's passing. When they were hanged to death at Lahore Central Prison, Bhagat Singh was 23 years old, Rajguru was 22, and Sukhdev was 23.
