The 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to celebrate the centenary of legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor  with the world premiere of the 4K restored version of his 1951 classic "Awara." This special screening, announced by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), will take place on September 13, 2024.

The black-and-white masterpiece, which stars Nargis and Raj Kapoor alongside his father, Prithviraj Kapoor, will be showcased in the TIFF Classics section. This tribute comes as part of the festivities surrounding Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary, making the event even more significant for cinema lovers worldwide.

The restoration of "Awara" has been a meticulous process, carried out under the National Film Heritage Mission, a collaborative effort between the NFDC and the National Film Archive of India. The project, funded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India, aimed to breathe new life into this cinematic gem while preserving the essence of Raj Kapoor's original vision. Notably, Kunal Kapoor supervised the enhanced color grading, ensuring that the film’s aesthetic remains true to its roots while embracing modern technology.

Often hailed as the "Showman of Indian Cinema," Raj Kapoor's influence as an actor, director, and producer is unparalleled in Indian film history. His works, known for their deep social messages and emotional resonance, continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and audiences alike.
