Oppenheimer Faces Backlash for Alleged Use of Bhagavad Gita in Intimate Scenes

'Oppenheimer' lands in trouble: July 21 marked the much-anticipated release of Christopher Nolan's latest directorial venture, 'Oppenheimer', a biopic centered around the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, famously known as the 'Father of the Atomic Bomb'. The film has been met with resounding praise from fans and critics alike for its compelling storytelling and stellar performances by a top-line cast, including Cillian Murphy in the titular role, alongside Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, and Jack Quaid.

However, amidst the accolades, the movie has also become embroiled in controversy due to a contentious scene featuring a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a revered Hindu scripture.

The Hindu epic, Bhagavad Gita, holds immense significance in Oppenheimer's life, adding a layer of depth and complexity to his character portrayal in the film. Nevertheless, its placement in the movie has sparked considerable debate and raised eyebrows among Indian viewers who hold the scripture in the highest regard.

The dispute is related to an intimate moment where a copy of the Bhagavad Gita appears prominently. The combination of a sacred text with an intimate moment has been seen by many Indian viewers as insulting and damaging to their religious emotions. A certain number of people have expressed their displeasure and dismay over the presence of such pictures, sparking conversations on social media sites.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), responsible for regulating and certifying films in India, opted not to modify the scene despite the potential controversy it might provoke. This decision has added to the grievances of those who find the portrayal objectionable. However, it has also been reported that the filmmakers themselves voluntarily edited various scenes, recognizing that some content could be sensitive for Indian audiences, even though the CBFC might not permit the contentious Bhagavad Gita scene under any circumstances.

One Twitter user pointed out the perceived double standard, questioning whether the reaction would have been different had a similar scene been included in a Bollywood production.

The filmmakers have yet to respond to the growing backlash directly, but the controversy surrounding the Bhagavad Gita scene has undoubtedly opened discourse on the boundaries of creative expression in the context of religious and cultural themes.
