On Friday, August 16, 2024, the National Film Awards unveiled its laureates across a spectrum of 44 categories, honouring the pinnacle of cinematic achievements from the previous year. This prestigious ceremony celebrated excellence in film with awards spanning Best Feature Film, Best Actor, and Best Actress, among others.

This year's awards encompassed a diverse array of films, including 27 feature films, 15 non-feature films, and two accolades in the Best Writing in Cinema category. Among the distinguished winners, Rishab Shetty's "Kantara" received the award for Popular Film, a testament to its widespread acclaim. "Gulmohar," featuring the stellar performances of Manoj Bajpayee and Sharmila Tagore, was recognised as the Best Hindi Film. Furthermore, the Malayalam film "Attam" emerged victorious in the Best Feature Film category.

"Gulmohar," which made its debut on the OTT platform Disney Plus Hotstar in 2023, was directed by Rahul V Chittella. The film's ensemble cast includes prominent actors such as Manoj Bajpayee, Sharmila Tagore, Amol Palekar, Suraj Sharma, Kaaveri Seth, and Utsavi Jha, who delivered compelling performances that contributed to the film's critical acclaim.

At the 70th National Film Awards, "Baghi Di Dhee" won the "Best Punjabi Film" Award, marking a milestone for Punjabi cinema. Directed by Mukesh Gautam and produced by G Next Media, the film, celebrated for its powerful narrative and stellar performances, pays tribute to the Gadar Movement's fighters. The story, penned by Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir and scripted by Pali Bhupinder Singh, follows a young girl's courageous quest for independence. Featuring a talented cast and evocative music by Bir Singh and Tejwant Kittu, the film is hailed as a significant achievement in Punjabi cinema and Indian filmmaking.

In the realm of regional cinema, the awards acknowledged outstanding contributions with the following recognitions:

Best Tamil Film: Ponniyin Selvan 2

Best Marathi Film: Walvi

Best Telugu Film: Karthikeya 2

Best Kannada Film: KGF 2

The 70th National Film Awards, which celebrate films certified by the Censor Board from January 1 to December 31, 2022, will culminate in a grand ceremony in October 2024. This event will feature President Droupadi Murmu presenting the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and other prestigious accolades, marking a momentous occasion for the Indian film industry and its luminaries.
