The buzz around director Nag Ashwin’s magnum opus, Kalki 2898 AD, has intensified over the past week. With its release date set for June 27, advance bookings for the first day are skyrocketing. Notably, Kalki 2898 AD is the first Indian film to be screened across all 210 IMAX screens. It will be available in both 2D and 3D versions, in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
The futuristic spectacle has made an impressive debut at the box office. Directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Prabhas, the sci-fi extravaganza reportedly grossed Rs 95 crore across India on its opening day, according to Sacnilk. As one of the biggest films of 2024, Kalki 2898 AD has raised expectations within the audience, especially since it hails from the Telugu film industry. Comparisons with ace director SS Rajamouli’s films are inevitable, and many believe Nag Ashwin's sci-fi flick could surpass them. If the film manages to gross nearly ₹200 crore on its opening day, it would signify a significant comeback for Prabhas.
Set in the dystopian city of Kashi, Kalki 2898 AD follows the story of Bhairava (Prabhas), a bounty hunter whose only aim is to move to the Complex ruled by the Supreme Yaskin. The plot thickens with the introduction of Ashwattama, who has been waiting to find SUM 80 and her child. Bhairava’s mission to capture SUM 80 leads him into conflicts with Ashwattama and other forces.
The film now holds the all-time North America premiere record, surpassing RRR.
