John Abraham Slams Bollywood Celebrities Endorsing Pan Masala: 'You’re Peddling Death'
The endorsement of pan masala, a product synonymous with chewing tobacco, by Bollywood celebrities has long been a subject of heated debate. These endorsements, often involving some of the industry's biggest names, have sparked numerous controversies, leading to public outcry and ethical dilemmas within the entertainment community. In recent years, several stars have taken a firm stand against promoting such products, declining lucrative offers in favour of maintaining their integrity. Among the most vocal critics of these endorsements is Bollywood actor John Abraham, who has recently voiced his frustration with celebrities who choose to endorse what he considers harmful and deadly products.

John Abraham, a figure currently in the limelight for his upcoming film 'Veda', did not mince his words when discussing the issue during a podcast with Ranveer Allahabadia. He candidly expressed his disdain for the practice of promoting pan masala, likening it to selling death. His stance is not merely a personal choice but a reflection of his broader principles and ethical considerations.
During the podcast, Abraham made it unequivocally clear that he would never endorse pan masala or similar products. He went further, openly criticizing those who do, accusing them of being complicit in promoting something as lethal as death itself. "If I live my life with integrity and practice what I preach, I am an ideal. However, if I present a false image to the public while behaving differently behind their backs, they will see through it," Abraham asserted. He was particularly scathing in his remarks about celebrities who advocate for fitness and healthy living while simultaneously endorsing pan masala, calling them out as hypocrites. "You’re peddling death," he declared, underlining the gravity of the issue.
The 'Veda' actor elaborated on his perspective, emphasizing that his critique was not aimed at any individual but rather at the principle of endorsing harmful products. "I care deeply for all my fellow actors and intend no disrespect. I want to make it clear that I'm speaking only for myself. But I refuse to sell death, as it is a matter of principle," he said. Abraham further highlighted the staggering financial scale of the pan masala industry, noting that it generates an annual revenue of ₹45,000 crores. This, he suggested, indicates governmental support, which is why such products remain legal. Nevertheless, he questioned the morality of such endorsements, asking, "How can you live with that?"
Abraham's criticism comes in the wake of significant backlash faced by other Bollywood icons such as Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgn, all of whom have jointly promoted pan masala in the past. The public outcry following these endorsements was swift and severe, leading Akshay Kumar to issue a public apology and announce that he would no longer endorse pan masala products. This episode serves as a stark reminder of the ethical responsibilities that come with fame and influence, particularly when it concerns public health.
