How Salman and Arbaaz Khan Coped with Their Father's Marriage to Helen

Salman Khan Films and Excel Entertainment Production House have embarked on an intriguing documentary series titled Angry Young Man, now available on Prime Video. This series explores the multifaceted lives of the legendary screenwriters and dialogue writers, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, offering a nuanced perspective on their storied careers and personal lives across three compelling episodes.

Among the various facets of their lives, the series delves into the more contentious aspects, including Salim Khan’s second marriage. This particular narrative thread provides a glimpse into the complexities of his relationships and the family dynamics that ensued.

Salma Khan's Reaction to Salim Khan's Marriage to Helen

In 1981, Salim Khan's marriage to the actress Helen was a significant event. At that juncture, Salman Khan was approximately 16 years old, while his younger brother Arbaaz was about 14. Their younger siblings, Sohail Khan and Arpita, were notably younger. The series reveals that Salman and Arbaaz were sent to boarding school to prevent their academic progress from being disrupted by this personal upheaval. Upon returning home for vacations, Salim Khan introduced Helen to them, explaining that their young ages might hinder their full comprehension of the situation.

Salim Khan reflects on this period with a sense of nostalgia and bemusement. He recounts, "I fell in love and informed Salma. She didn’t say much, but it was clear she wasn’t pleased. When the children came, she was even more astonished. I told her she would understand once they grew up." Arbaaz Khan, contributing to the series, shares, "Mom would ask us to bring Helen over, so we did, but it took us time to accept her." Salman Khan adds a personal touch to this narrative, stating, "Dad was fair to everyone. It was a bit painful for Mom, but she helped us understand that Helen was also our mother and that we should love her. Her nature was kind, and we eventually saw that she cared for us as if we were her own. Now, I can joke that I have two mothers (laughs)." Notably, Salim Khan and Helen did not have any children together.

The Union of Salma and Salim Khan

The series also sheds light on Salim Khan's first marriage. In 1964, he married Sushila Charak, who thereafter became known as Salma Khan. This union was influenced by Salim Khan’s family, who insisted on either marrying Sushila or consenting to an arranged marriage. Their first child, Salman, was born in 1965, followed by Arbaaz Khan, Alvira, and Sohail Khan. Additionally, Salim Khan and his family adopted Arpita, who was embraced as a beloved member of the family.
