Heeramandi will highlight the history of the Lahore courtesans and delve into some of its less well-known facets. Pre-independence India will be the setting.

In a previous statement, Sanjay Leela Bhansali highlighted his magnum opus and said, "Heeramandi represents a significant turning point in my development as a director. Based on the courtesans of Lahore, this epic drama is the first of its kind. I am anxious but delighted to create this series since it is ambitious, huge, and all-encompassing. I'm excited to work with Netflix and introduce Heeramandi to viewers all across the world."
