Oscars invites Bollywood stars Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Karan Johar and others to join Academy
Indian film celebrities Ram Charan, Mani Ratnam, Karan Johar, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Chandrabose, and MM Keeravani have received invitations to join the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This announcement highlights the growing influence of Indian cinema on the global stage. The Academy's decision to invite these talented individuals reflects their significant contributions to the arts and sciences of motion pictures and their impact on movie lovers worldwide.
Sabu Cyril, the art director of the highly anticipated film 'RRR,' and cinematographer K.K. Senthil Kumar have also been extended membership invitations. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang expressed their pride in welcoming these artists and professionals into the Academy, emphasizing their exceptional talent and the vital role they have played in the world of cinema.
Joining the Indian film celebrities in this year's list of 398 invitees are a diverse range of artists and executives. Austin Butler, Ke Huy Quan, Keke Palmer, NT Rama Rao Jr, and music superstar Taylor Swift are among the esteemed individuals who have been invited to join the Academy's membership. If all the invitees accept, the total number of Academy members will rise to 10,817, with 9,375 eligible to vote for the 96th Oscars, which is scheduled to take place on March 10, 2024.
Among the invitees, eight filmmakers have received invitations to multiple branches. However, upon accepting membership, they can only select one branch to join. These include Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"), Colm Bairead ("The Quiet Girl"), Edward Berger ("All Quiet on the Western Front"), Antonio Campos ("The Devil All the Time"), Lukas Dhont ("Close"), Ana Katz ("The Dog Who Wouldn't be Quiet"), and Santiago Mitre ("Argentina, 1985").
Compared with the previous year, the Academy invited 397 new members in 2022, which included singer Billie Eilish, Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, "Belfast" stars Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan, and Disney executive Dana Walden. With this latest list of invitees, the Academy's membership now comprises 34 percent women, 18 percent individuals from underrepresented communities, and 20 percent members from outside the United States.
Looking ahead, the addition of these new members will undoubtedly bring more star power and renowned filmmakers to the upcoming awards season. Highly anticipated films like Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon," featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, and Denis Villeneuve's "Dune Part Two," starring Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet, promise to captivate audiences and further solidify the Academy's recognition of exceptional cinematic achievements.
