The ED's money laundering investigation is based on an excise and prohibition department case. In July 2017, the Hyderabad Excise And Prohibition Department's Special Investigation Team launched an investigation into Tollywood celebrities and others.
The SIT then collected hair and nail samples from 62 suspects, including the celebrities, but no charges have been filed against any of them so far. SIT has also yet to reveal whether any celebrities were involved in drug trafficking or consumption.
