Veteran Actress Farida Jalal Supports Sharmin Segal Amid Heeramandi Backlash
Veteran Bollywood actor Farida Jalal has supported her co-star, Sharmin Segal, amidst criticism directed at Segal's performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's web series Heeramandi.
Farida Jalal, renowned for her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's web series "Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar," has stepped forward in support of her co-star, Sharmin Segal, amidst criticism directed at Segal's performance. Segal, who has been the subject of relentless trolling for what some perceive as expressionless acting, has found allies in her fellow actors, including Richa Chadha, Taha Shah Badussha, and Aditi Rao Hydari.
Jalal, who portrays the character 'Qudsia Begum' in the series, voiced her support for Segal during an interview with India Today. She expressed her dismay at the harsh treatment Segal has faced, urging people to show kindness and acknowledge Segal's efforts. Jalal emphasized that Segal had performed to the best of her abilities given the circumstances, noting that the character did not necessarily demand an overtly loud or boisterous portrayal.
While supporting Sharmin Segal, Jalal criticized the cruelty of those who had targeted Segal with mean-spirited comments. She highlighted Segal's portrayal of a 'shayara' who falls in love with Taha Shah's character, emphasizing that the role did not necessitate an exaggerated performance. Jalal urged for empathy and understanding, suggesting that perhaps Segal had reached her maximum capacity in the role, and thus should not be subjected to undue criticism.
Aditi Rao Hydari, another co-star of Segal's in the series, echoed similar sentiments during an interview with Puja Talwar. Hydari condemned the harshness of the criticism directed at Segal, emphasizing the importance of constructive feedback rather than outright negativity. She called for solidarity among actors and emphasized the need to support one another amidst such challenges.
