Unrelenting Floodwaters and Inundated Areas:

By 11 AM on Thursday, the water level of the Yamuna River had reached a staggering 208.57 meters, surpassing the previous records of 208.46 meters and 208.08 meters at 7 AM and 11 PM the previous night, respectively. The deluge has engulfed numerous low-lying areas, including prominent locations such as Ring Road, Nigam Bodh Ghat, Yamuna Bazar, Monastery Market, and Bhairo Marg. Consequently, ongoing evacuations are being carried out to ensure the safety of residents affected by the flooding. The gravity of the situation has prompted the state government to make a plea for people to vacate their homes and seek higher ground.

Response and Precautionary Measures:

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena has called for a meeting to address the unfolding crisis. In response to the flooding, the Delhi Police have implemented Section 144 in the affected regions, ensuring the maintenance of law and order. Additionally, the Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has urged citizens to avoid venturing outside unless absolutely necessary, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety amidst the calamity.

Impacts on Essential Services and Education:

The flooding has had severe repercussions on essential services and educational institutions across the city. All three water treatment plants in Delhi have been forced to halt operations due to the encroaching floodwaters. This disruption has significant implications for the availability of clean and potable water for the city's residents. Furthermore, both government and private schools in flood-affected areas have been compelled to shut down temporarily, prioritizing the safety of students and staff.

Extremely concerning. Yamuna water enters the Ring Road near the ITO flyover.

Causes and Historical Context:

The current surge in the Yamuna River's water level can be attributed to heavy rainfall in northern India and the continuous discharge of water from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana. The record set in 1978, with a water level of 207.49 meters, remained unchallenged for 45 years until Wednesday afternoon at 1 PM, when the river shattered the previous milestone. Remarkably, this is the fourth instance in Delhi's history where the water level of the Yamuna has surpassed the critical threshold of 207 meters, underscoring the severity of the situation. As a precautionary measure, municipal schools in flood-affected areas will remain closed until further notice, ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
