Karwa Chauth, also known as Karva Chauth or Karaka Chaturthi, is an important Hindu festival celebrated with great enthusiasm across North India, including states like Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Falling on November 1 this year, it is a day when married women observe a stringent fast, or 'nirjala vrat,' from dawn until the moonrise, praying for the long and prosperous lives of their husbands.

The significance of this festival lies in its portrayal of unwavering love, commitment, and the timeless bond between married couples.

The Rituals of Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth is marked by a series of rituals and customs that symbolize devotion and love. Here are some of the key observances associated with this auspicious day:

Fasting: Married women fast throughout the day, refraining from consuming food and water. The fast is broken only after offering Arghaya (offering water) to the moon in the evening.

Worship of Deities: Women begin their day with prayers to deities such as Karwa Mata, Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, and Lord Kartikeya. These prayers seek divine blessings for the well-being and longevity of their husbands.

Moon Worship: The evening sky holds a special significance as women gather on rooftops or open spaces to offer prayers to the moon. It is believed that the moon represents the bond between a husband and wife. Afterward, they partake in a morsel of food and sip water from their husbands' hands.
