"Kalki 2898 AD" follows the story of Bhairava, a bounty hunter played by Prabhas, who aims to accumulate enough units to live in the Complex. He is accompanied by an AI droid named BU-JZ-1, portrayed by Keerthy Suresh. The film intertwines sci-fi elements with Indian mythology, specifically the Mahabharata, set 6000 years in the future. Amitabh Bachchan's character, Ashwatthama, seeks redemption by aiding Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu, played by Prabhas. Deepika Padukone plays SUM-80, and Kamal Haasan portrays Supreme Yaskin.
Director Nag Ashwin explained in a press conference that the film's title, "Kalki 2898 AD," reflects its fusion of futuristic and mythological themes.
