Tamil Cinema Mourns the Loss of Iconic Actor-Politician Vijayakanth

The recent passing of the distinguished actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth has sent shockwaves through the spheres of both film and politics. At the age of 71, he breathed his last in Chennai. Reports indicate that following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, he was reliant on ventilator support, although the hospital's statement mentioned his battle with pneumonia. Today, on December 28, 2023, he bid a final farewell to the world after being admitted to a Chennai hospital.

Vijayakanth's demise has evoked profound sorrow within the Tamil cinema industry, among his party members from the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), and amongst his legion of fans. Esteemed South Indian celebrities such as Kamal Haasan and Aishwarya Laxmi have expressed deep sorrow at the loss of the revered 'Captain' Vijayakanth.

Kamal Haasan, in a poignant post, expressed heartfelt sorrow at Vijayakanth's passing. He penned a comprehensive note, stating, "The passing of my dear brother, the President of the National Association of Indian Cinema, esteemed actor in Tamil cinema, and beloved 'Captain' Vijayakanth, is profoundly distressing. He lived his life encapsulating humanity in every endeavor. His political ideology instilled newfound confidence. He offered enduring aid to the underprivileged. Unflinching courage defined him. Vijayakanth, the revolutionary figure in cinema and politics, will forever remain in our memories."

Saddened to learn about Vijayakanth Garu's passing. A true powerhouse in both cinema and politics. May his soul find eternal peace. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Before stepping into the political arena, Vijayakanth had achieved immense fame as an actor. He had solidified his position as a distinguished actor through starring roles in several popular films such as "Honest Raj," "Tyagam," and "Tamizh Selvan," earning recognition as one of the finest actors in the industry. With a successful career spanning over 154 films, he left an indelible mark in the hearts of his audience.

His political journey was equally notable. Establishing his political party, DMDK, in September 2005, he ventured into the realm of politics. His victory in the 2006 legislative elections marked a significant milestone. Aligning with the AIADMK during the 2011 elections, his party secured a majority, positioning Vijayakanth as the opposition leader for the subsequent five years.
