The earthquake occurred on the Noto Peninsula with a depth of 10 kilometers, catching many off guard. Officials warned of potential aftershocks over the next week, particularly in the next two to three days.

Tsunami Warning and Impact

The earthquake triggered a major tsunami warning in Ishikawa Prefecture, leading to tsunami waves in several cities. Wajima City reported waves over 120 centimeters high, causing significant damage to a well-known traditional marketplace popular among tourists. A subsequent fire in Wajima City destroyed over 100 stores and houses.

Casualties and Damage

Wajima city officials confirmed at least eight deaths, including a man crushed under a collapsed building. The fire department received reports of collapsed houses and people trapped under damaged buildings. Other prefectures, including Niigata and Toyoma, reported dozens of injuries. The earthquake affected power supply, with over 44,000 households in Ishikawa Prefecture facing power outages. The Hokuriku Electric Power Company shut down generators at its Nanao Ota thermal power plant.
