Sidhu Moose Wala's song 'SYL' was released posthumously on June 23 and, since then, the song has been making records. The song got one million views within half an hour.

The song was penned and sung by Sidhu Moose Wala which highlights the issue of the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, Punjab’s rights over river waters, and the Sikh prisoners. Let's find out what is SYL and who was Balwinder Singh Jattana?
What is SYL?
SYL stands for Satluj-Yamuna-Link Canal. It is a 214 km long canal which is currently under construction and was intended to share the waters of Punjab with the state of Haryana. The SYL Canal was first suggested in 1982 proposing the water of Punjab would be transported via this pipeline to neighbouring states like Haryana.

Who was Balwinder Singh Jattana?
Balwinder Singh Jattana was considered a ‘Sikh Liberation Hero’ as he played a crucial role in protesting against the SYL canal. Balwinder Jattana along with his three accomplices allegedly assassinated some officials who were discussing the construction of the SYL canal at a Chandigarh office in 1990.

After their assassination, the SYL project was pulled off. As per the Sikh Community, Balwinder Singh Jattana was a major factor in the SYL Canal Project’s suspension at that time.
On September 4, 1991, the police got information about the whereabouts of Balwinder Singh Jattana. While Jattana and Charanjeet Singh Channa were driving towards Sadhugarh village after they saw police. While they were running into the nearby fields, they were killed in an encounter.
