As the year 2017 bids adieu and 2018 approaches doorsteps, our Punjabi Film Industry has left behind some cinematic experiences that will stay with the viewers for a long time. 2017 saw a rapid growth in Pollywood in terms of both quality as well quantity. While we saw many new faces making their debut in Punjabi Film Industry, there were certain films that left a deep impression on viewers. Today we will look at some of the Punjabi films released in 2017 that set Pollywood on a whole new course.

Manje Bistre

Released on the auspicious day of Vaisakhi, this Gippy Grewal and Sonam Bajwa starrer reminded Punjabi viewers of those dormant Punjabi traditions that are almost on the brink of extinction today. Set in the background of days when relatives used to flock the house many days before the wedding and people would knock on their neighbors’ doors to collect cots and mattresses to arrange bedding for their relatives, Manje Bistre was certainly an idea which was never introduced in the industry before. Manje Bistre, written by Gippy Grewal became one of the top grossing films of the year which is clear indication of the kind of content that Punjabi audience craves for.

Super Singh

Well, if there was anything missing in Punjabi Film Industry then it was the concept of a superhero which was eventually fulfilled by this Diljit Dosanjh and Sonam Bajwa starrer. Super Singh’s record breaking box office collections proved that Punjabi audience is not stuck with one particular niche.

Channa Mereya

Released on 14th July 2017, Channa mereya became an instant hit amongst the love birds who were looking for a romantic film. Channa Mereya, which saw the debut of Punjabi artists like Ninja, Amrit Maan was the Punjabi remake of a superhit Marathi film titled ‘Sairat’.

The Black Prince

Released on 21st July, 2017, The Black Prince took everyone by surprise for many reasons. To watch a Punjabi artist play a protagonist in a Hollywood star cast was a matter of proud for all of us. Based on the life of Duleep Singh (played by Satinder Sartaj), the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire and the Punjab, and his relationship with Queen Victoria, The Black Prince starred some prominent faces from Hollywood.

Nikka Zaildar 2

This second instalment of Nikka Zaildar franchise went on to become a bigger hit than the original one. A perfect combination of love triangle and old Punjabi culture, Nikka Zaildar 2 was another milestone in director Simerjit Singh’s career.
