Robert Dalva death news: Robert Dalva, the film editor who received an Oscar nod for his efforts on the family adventure "The Black Stallion," has passed away at 80. He worked on five movies with Joe Johnston as director, including "Jumanji" and "Captain America: The First Avenger."
Dalva passed away on January 27 in Marin County, California, from lymphoma, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Robert John Dalva, who was born in New York City on April 14, 1942, rented movies for a film program while attending Colgate University. At Syracuse University, he regularly attended a Friday film session where he learned how to operate a camera.

In an interview from 2012, Dalva stated that they have "almost a million feet of film." About 12,000 feet is covered in a two-hour film. Additionally, the island scene, which lasted for around 37 minutes, accounted for 75% of that million feet. The main challenge, according to the Hollywood Reporter, was cutting the island piece down to a size that made sense.
Dalva stated that later, "Francis drew up in a taxicab and got out," while he was strolling along the street close to Zoetrope. Robert, if there is a Black Stallion sequel, you want to read it, he remarked.
The sole motion picture Dalva ever directed was The Black Stallion Returns (1983), which was filmed in Morocco and Italy. (He directed episodes of Crime Story and Lucas' Clone Wars for television.)
In addition to Jumanji (1995) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Dalva edited the Johnston-directed movies October Sky (1999), Jurassic Park III (2001), and Hidalgo (2004). Johnston, who was an ILM representative for the movie's miniature and optical effects team, coincidentally also worked on Star Wars.
