Raksha Bandhan, a cherished festival celebrating the profound bond of love, trust, and affection between brothers and sisters, holds a significant place in the Indian cultural calendar. According to the Panchang, this festival is observed on the full moon day of Sawan, known as Sawan Purnima. In 2024, this auspicious occasion will be observed on August 19th, when sisters across the nation will ceremoniously tie the Rakhi on their brothers' wrists.

The tradition of Raksha Bandhan is deeply rooted in rituals, with a particular emphasis on performing the Rakhi-tying ceremony during an auspicious muhurat. This timing is crucial, as tying the Rakhi during the Bhadra period—an inauspicious phase—is strongly discouraged. Bhadra is considered a time when the celestial alignments are unfavourable, and as such, it is believed to bring misfortune. To ensure the ceremony is performed correctly, families meticulously consult the Panchang to determine the most favourable time.

For this year's Raksha Bandhan, the Panchang has revealed an important detail: there is no auspicious muhurat for tying Rakhi in the morning. The full moon, which marks the festival, will rise at 3:04 AM and remain visible until 11:55 PM. Despite the full moon being present throughout the day, the period of Bhadra will persist until 1:29 PM, making the morning hours unsuitable for the Rakhi-tying ritual.

Astrologers highlight that Rakhi should not be tied during Bhadra due to its inauspicious connotations, a belief rooted in mythology. It is said that Ravana’s sister performed the Rakhi-tying ritual during this period, which, according to legend, contributed to his downfall. As a result, the tradition dictates that Rakhi should not be tied during Bhadra to avoid any adverse effects.
