According to recent investigations, approximately 22% of pani puri samples tested statewide failed to meet the stringent safety standards outlined by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Out of a total of 260 samples meticulously collected for analysis, 41 were found to contain alarming levels of artificial colors, substances known to carry potential health risks. Additionally, 18 samples were identified as substandard, rendering them unsuitable for consumption.

The findings of the study bring to light a pressing concern regarding the adherence to essential food safety regulations within the street food sector. Shockingly, several samples were found to harbor chemicals such as Brilliant Blue, Sunset Yellow, and Tartazine—compounds whose ingestion has been associated with significant health implications. These discoveries underscore a critical need for stricter oversight and enforcement of food safety protocols throughout the production and distribution chain of pani puris.

The presence of unauthorized artificial colors in a considerable proportion of the samples raises red flags about the potential health hazards posed to consumers. Such additives, when consumed in excess, have been linked to adverse effects ranging from allergic reactions to long-term health complications. The identification of substandard samples further emphasizes the urgency for comprehensive quality control measures to safeguard public health.

In response to these alarming revelations, regulatory authorities and stakeholders must collaborate to implement robust monitoring frameworks and stringent enforcement mechanisms. Ensuring compliance with established safety guidelines is paramount to mitigating risks associated with the consumption of street foods like golgappas. Public awareness campaigns regarding food safety practices and informed consumer choices also play a pivotal role in safeguarding community health.
