On this special occasion, which falls on the second day of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month, sisters express love and affection for their brothers.

The ritual involves sisters applying a tilak (a mark) on their brother's forehead, accompanied by heartfelt prayers for their long and prosperous life. In return, brothers present their sisters with gifts as tokens of love and appreciation.

Bhai Dooj 2023: Date, and Time

This year, the auspicious Shukla Dwitiya Tithi of Kartik month begins on November 14, 2023, at 2:36 p.m. and concludes on November 15 at 1:47 p.m. According to Udaya Tithi, Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 15.

The Significance of Bhai Dooj

The festival carries a rich significance rooted in ancient tales. One such legend involves Yamaraj, the deity of death, visiting his sister Yami. During his visit, Yami warmly welcomed her brother by applying a tilak on his forehead and preparing special delicacies. Touched by her love and compassion, Yamaraj granted her a wish to have him return every year. Yami also advised sisters to perform similar ceremonies and apply tilak without fearing the god of death. This day is also known as 'Yama Dwitiya' in South India.

Another tale narrates Lord Krishna's visit to his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon Narakasura. Subhadra marked the occasion by applying a tilak on Krishna's forehead, and since then, this day has been celebrated as Bhai Dooj.

Bhai Dooj, with its timeless stories and traditions, continues to strengthen the cherished bond between siblings, emphasizing the values of love, care, and familial connections. As we approach this year's celebration, let us embrace the joy and significance of Bhai Dooj in our lives.
