Nirmal Rishi's artistic journey began under the mentorship of Punjab’s esteemed theatre figures, Harpal and Neena Tiwana. Her cinematic debut in the film "Long Da Lishkara" (1983) introduced her to audiences as the memorable Gulabo Maasi. She continued to impress with her roles in contemporary hits such as "Nikka Zaildar" and its sequel "Nikka Zaildar 2," as well as "Buhe Bariyan."
Born in 1943 in the village of Khiva Kalan in Mansa district, Rishi was raised in a Punjabi Brahmin family. Her father, Sarpanch Baldev Krishan Rishi, and mother, Bachni Devi, fostered her early interest in theatre. Although she initially pursued a career in physical education at Government College Patiala, her passion for acting prevailed. It was during her studies that she encountered Harpal and Neena Tiwana, joining their theatre group, Punjab Kala Manch. She was among their first students, alongside the late Shri Om Puri. Rishi's enduring connection with the Tiwana family has been a cornerstone of her career, and she is a founding trustee of the Harpal Tiwana Foundation.
