"Mission Raniganj" draws inspiration from the true-life events of Jaswant Singh Gill, who led India's first successful coal mine rescue. This brave man became a symbol of hope during a dark hour in the history of Raniganj's Mahabir Colliery on November 13, 1989.
What happened in Raniganj in 1989?On that fateful day, as miners went about their daily routine of extracting coal, disaster struck in the form of a rapid and unexpected underground flood caused by a ruptured groundwater level. A total of 220 miners found themselves trapped in the perilous depths of the mine, with their chances of survival dwindling by the second. Jaswant Singh Gill emerged as a beacon of hope.

Jaswant Singh Gill was born on November 22, 1937, in Sathiala, Amritsar. He pursued his education at Khalsa College, completing his studies in 1959.
